By combining innovation and functionality into our exclusive TrapWire technology, the Tephra carabiner is safer, stronger, and noticeably lighter than other belay carabiners. The TrapWire “keeper” at the bottom of the carabiner helps maintain proper orientation while belaying and it serves as the main spring of the carabiner. We eliminated the traditional lever/pusher and internal spring inside the gate which translates into a lighter product with fewer parts, improved reliability, and a stronger hinge.
Tephra is the Greek word for erupted elements from a volcano, and thanks to the unique hot-forged frame, the Tephra TrapWire is one of the strongest belay carabiners: 27kN rated strength (major axis) and a burly 10kN open-gate strength. The narrow, low-profile nose and keylock design make smooth, snag-free connections to belay loops, rappel devices, webbing and gear loops. Unlike most belay ‘biners with an orientation-assist bar across the frame, the Tephra TrapWire permits clean and simple racking of a Grigri or belay device while not in use.
